Hemsworth completed a league double over Northallerton on Saturday thanks to a 27-17 victory at Moxon Fields.

Carl Wroe’s men won in North Yorkshire on the opening day of the season and against proved too strong for Northerallerton on home soil.

Hemsworth were boosted by the return of a number of players. Jacob Bailey become the 50th player to pull on the Hemsworth shirt this season, while Jake Thomson, Matt Snowden, Matt Hall and Mark Mears all returned to bolster the home ranks but Zac Mears were absent due to representative duties the following day.

The visitors’ game plan was to use their big forwards in picking and driving, combined with rolling mauls to try and dominate the scrummage.

It worked early on when a driving maul allowed them to touch down for the opening try of the match.

Hemsworth were fired up and keen to bounce back from three straight defeats and captain Joe Thompson led by example, helping get his men on level terms with an unconverted try before providing the pass for Emil Somms to score and give Hemsworth the lead on 22 minutes.

The hosts saw the penalty count stacked against them, however, and Northallerton held on to the ball for long spells of the first-half, something which saw them cross the line before half-time to level.

Hemsworth’s half-time team talk seemed to have the desired impact and they hit the front again through Dale Joburns, while Thompson booted over the conversion.

Within two minutes Rob Hooker extended Hemsworth’s lead when he ran 50 metres to touch down for an unconverted try and give the hosts a strong hold on the game.

To their credit the visitors did not throw in the towel and closed the gap to five points with a second pushover try of the afternoon.

It gave Northallerton a big boost and they poured the pressure on the Hemsworth line only to be met by a well-organised defence.

Hemsworth gradually worked their way down the pitch and Ben Thomas scored the final try of the game to secure the points for Wroe’s men.

Hemsworth still have one more league match to play this season against Bailton at Moxon Fields on Saturday.
