Long-serving member of staff Rob Smith has been named the inaugural winner of the Featherstone Rovers employee of the month award.
The award is a new initiative introduced by the club’s chief executive Craig Poskitt and chairman Mark Campbell.
Groundsman Rob won January’s award for his work in keeping the pitch in good shape for three pre-season matches, starting with the fixture against Hunslet Hawks on New Year’s Day.
Despite dreadful conditions against Hunslet, the pitch stayed in good condition mainly due to the long hours and hard work Rob put in preparing and repairing the pitch after games.
Mr Poskitt said: “It’s been a tough pre-season schedule for all involved at Featherstone Rovers none more so for Rob.
“Nearly every member of full time staff at the club will have worked every day throughout January which sometimes goes unnoticed.
“Rob has had a particularly hard month ensuring games are played on a pitch that is conducive for entertaining rugby league to be played on.
“We have introduced a new initiative that will give something back to our hard working staff and Rob is a worthy winner for January.
“A lot of the work carried out by Rob is hard and time consuming to make sure games go ahead so the first team are ready for the season and supporters can be entertained. Rob currently does this at the moment with minimal resources in terms of equipment and fertilisers compared to his counterparts in Super League. This is something we are working on to bring in extra revenues to improve the playing surface when the new league structures come in to place.
“In the meantime, if any business is interested in supporting Rob through sponsorship please do not hesitate to get in touch.
“Rob is a long serving member of the team and is truly committed to Featherstone Rovers. I know John Bastian has been particularly impressed with his outstanding contribution and his renewed enthusiasm for the club.”
