Castleford Tigers head coach Daryl Powell has spoken of being encouraged by the developing half-back partnership of Luke Gale and Ben Roberts.

The pair teamed up at Salford last Sunday and impressed despite the Tigers’ overall display being below par.

They have been vying for the half-back roles with Liam Finn since the start of the season and Roberts has had game time at hooker as he looks to settle into the English game, but the pair could be set for a run in the team together if they can maintain their recent form.

“Luke Gale and Ben Roberts have had a few games together now and I thought there were some good signs (at Salford),” said Powell.

“Our good ball sets were better and more accurate and I thought that was a big improvement for us. We went through with a lot of our plays.

“We’re still looking to improve, of course, but I thought they worked pretty well together.

“Whether they are the first choice half-back combination now depends on their form.

“We’ve got Liam Finn, who will be disappointed with his performance at Widnes, but he can force his way back in. We are never cut and dried on anything because people have got to keep working hard and playing well.

It’s a fluid situation, but Luke and Ben are working pretty well together at the moment.”
