Frickley Athletic will finish the season at FC United of Manchester on Saturday, May 4 after the Evo-Stik Premier League decided to extend the campaign due to a fixture backlog.
The season was due to finish a week earlier, on Saturday, April 27, but the harsh winter weather has resulted in a large number of games being postponed and seen a big fixture pile-up for teams across the divisions.
The weekend snowfall decimated the Evo-Stik Premier League action, leaving the Blues with nine matches to play before their ‘original’ final match at home against Witton Albion next month.
Some teams have more matches to squeeze in, leaving the league with no option other to extend the campaign by a week.
“The League Board are mindful of the many factors both for and against extending the season by one week,” said a league statement.
“It is however with a responsibility to the welfare of players, extensive midweek travelling and spectators getting to games that reluctantly the decision has been made to extend the season to include a full round of fixtures on Saturday 4th May.
“This decision has not been taken lightly and must not been seen as a precedent for future seasons when perhaps a global disruption such as this season will not be an issue.”
Frickley face a double-header over Easter with a trip to Ashton United on Saturday followed by the visit of Whitby Town to Westfield Lane on Monday (both kick-off at 3pm).
