Karl Rose’s Frickley Athletic squad is taking shape with two more players signing on for next season.
Twenty-six year-old midfielder Jack Wakefield has re-signed with the club after playing for them at the back end of last season.
He joined the Blues from Ossett Town and, despite missing games through injury, made his presence felt when in the side.
Joel Barnett, meanwhile, is a new signing, the 24-year-old striker joining from Ryman League First Division North side Tilbury FC.
He started his career as a junior at Scunthorpe United before joining Ossett Town. He then joined Chelmsford City and went on to have spells at Aveley, Great Wakering Rovers, Thurrock and Tilbury before returning north.
Frickley began their pre-season games on Tuesday night when they made the short trip to play Hemsworth MW and a 48th minute penalty from Nick Guest saw the home side beat the Blues 1-0.
With Luke Hinsley having second thoughts over a move to Goole he was one of only three of last season’s squad in the starting 11, Ben Simpson and Gavin Allott the other two.
New signings John Cyrus and Conor Qualter formed an impressive central defensive partnership in a first half that saw the Blues rarely troubled at the back.
Qualter had the Blues’ first chance when his shot following a corner was blocked on the line in the fourth minute. Allott had a shot blocked by the legs of the Hemsworth goalkeeper and in the 28th minute Allott and Hinsley combined for Hinsley to drag an angled shot just wide.
Half-time saw numerous changes to the Blues line-up with Sam Denton and Luke Jeffs coming into the defence and personnel in most other positions changed.
The only goal came in the 48th minute when Guest beat Simpson from the spot after Jeffs was penalised.
Frickley lacked their first half cohesion, rarely troubling the Hemsworth goal but at the other end Simpson had to be alert to tip over a great 30-yard shot from former Blues’ player Jason Yates.
The Blues are next in action on Saturday away to Maltby Main (kick-off 3pm) before they play their first home game on Saturday, July 26 against Garforth Town.
Admission charges for Frickley’s home pre-season friendlies have now been set. For the Garforth Town game it will be £3 adults, £1 concessions; for the match against Scunthorpe United on Tuesday, July 29 it will be £5 adults, £3 concessions; and the for the North Ferriby United game on Saturday, August 2 it will be £4 adults, £2 concessions.
