Frickley Athletic went down 4-0 against a strong Doncaster Rovers squad in their first pre-season friendly match of the summer on Tuesday night.
Championship side Rovers brought a strong squad to Westfield Lane, enough for two different sides in each half, including goalkeeper Neil Sullivan, striker Billy Paynter, captain Rob Jones and former Real Madrid man Marc De Val Fernandez, and they eased to victory.
Frickley were also bolstered by a number of new faces after only returning to pre-season training last week and enjoyed a good run out against strong and experienced opposition in front of a good crowd of 700 spectators.
The Blues kept Paul Dickov’s men at bay for the opening quarter of the match but Rovers struck three times before the interval after finding the breakthrough.
Paul Keegan opened the scoring for the Keepmoat Stadium club and then turned provider when his cross was met by Chris Brown to double the visitors’ lead.
Kyle Bennett came close to extending Doncaster’s lead but was denied by Blues goalkeeper Tom Woodhead, but Rovers did manage to get their third when Brown doubled his tally for the night before the break.
The largely one-way traffic continued in the second half, with both sides making plenty of changes, and Dave Syers completed the scoring for Rovers with 17 minutes to play.
