Derby duel welcomes Hemsworth MW and Pontefract Collieries into New Year

HEMSWORTH MW kick-off the New Year with a local derby against Pontefract Collieries at the MDC Sports Stadium on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

The game is set to be a cracker, with both sides eager to start 2013 with three crucial Northern Counties East League Division 1 points after going through a rain-hit December without a win to show for their efforts.

Welfare bagged just one point from two home matches, with a disappointing 1-0 loss against AFC Emley on Boxing Day bringing their year to a close.

Collieries, who parted company with Brendan Ormsby last month, did not fare much better with just two points from a possible nine coming their way.

Nicky Handley and Duncan Bray, Ormsby’s former assistants, have been placed in charge on an interim basis and will be out to bag their first win to get any play-off ambitions back on-track. Victory will also do no harm to any application for the job on a permanent basis.

The last time the sides met was on the opening day of the season when a 65th-minute Neil Towler goal saw Hemsworth start the season with maximum points.
