Barnsley have confirmed the signing of Brentford defender Alfie Mawson on a three-year deal.

The 21-year-old spent last season on loan at Wycombe Wanderers making 50 appearances and scoring seven times.

The defender becomes the third signing at Oakwell following the arrivals of Marley Watkins and Marc Roberts.

Upon signing for the club, he said: “I’m really pleased to get this sorted and can’t wait to get going.

“I was lucky to have lots of interest from elsewhere and even the Championship but once I met Lee Johnson here at Oakwell my mind was made up quickly.”

Mawson also tweeted: “Delighted to have signed for @bfc_official and looking forward to getting the season started!”

The two clubs will have to agree a compensation package for Mawson’s development and training with the Tykes.

The club have also confirmed that John Vaughan has joined the ranks as first-team goalkeeping coach.

The 51-year-old earned promotions with Preston North End, Lincoln City and Cambridge United in a career spanning 17 years.

Vaughan said: “I’m really looking forward to working with Lee Johnson and the rest of the staff and players and I can’t wait to get cracking for the new campaign.”
