BARNSLEY are close to signing John Rooney, the brother of Manchester United and England star Wayne, on a deal until the end of the season.
The 21-year-old midfielder has been on a one-month trial with the Championship club and has impressed Reds boss Keith Hill enough to be offered a deal to remain at Oakwell on a permanent basis.
Hill says the player is “worth taking a punt on” and someone Barnsley “can develop”.
Like his older brother, John came through the youth ranks at Everton but has most recently played in America for Orlando City.
The deal is subject to international clearance and it’s understood it won’t be finalised in time for Rooney to be involved in Barnsley’s match at Charlton Athletic on Saturday.
