Frickley Athletic continued their defence of the Sheffield and Hallamshire Senior Cup with a 1-0 victory at Harworth Colliery in the second round.
Ollie Fearon scored the only goal of the game just six minutes in to ensure progression for Karl Rose’s men against their Central Midlands League opponents.
The Blues are keen on a return to Hillsborough after winning the competition last season and boss Karl Rose fielded a strong side for the trip to their lower-division opponents. Just three changes were made to the side that beat Stafford Rangers at the weekend with Lee Stratford replacing Andy Villermann at left back, Jimmy Ghaichem coming in for Joe Fox and Fearon starting up front in place of Luke Hinsley.
Frickley had the wind at the backs in the first half and it helped them come flying out of the traps. Fearon was central to the visitors’ early attacks and he saw his cross headed over the bar by Jay McFadzean.
The opener came soon after as Joe Wilcox sent Fearon away with a penetrating pass and the striker lobbed the ball over Harworth stopper Mark Latham for what proved to be the decisive goal.
It could have got better for the Blues but McFadzean struck the post and Jake Picton’s follow-up header was cleared off the line.
After Frickley’s initial burst of pressure the game became more scrappy and Lloyd Wilkinson had Harworth’s first real threat on goal before Luke Jeffs had to make a crucial last-ditch tackle to deny Lewis Hilton on 25 minutes.
Few chances were carved out in the second half but the dismissal of Wilkinson for a second bookable offence left Frickley in the driving seat.
Rose’s men could have wrapped it up but McFadzean, Ghaichem and substitute Hinsley all saw chances come and go.
