NEW signing Jamie Ellis played down his memorable Castleford Tigers debut after kicking 10 goals and scoring a try in the 52-6 win against Huddersfield Giants on Sunday.
Ellis (pictured) set a new Tigers record for the most goals in a Super League match, beating Frano Botica’s nine against Workington in 1996.
Ellis teamed up once again with his former coach at Leigh, Ian Millward, when he joined the Tigers from Hull ahead of schedule on Wednesday and was promptly the talk of the town after a stunning debut that earned him the official man of the match and praise from fans and staff alike.
But the player himself was quick to thank his team-mates for helping him settle in so quickly.
He said: “I felt confident, but I didn’t think it would go as well as that.
“I’d like to thank the boys for helping me out. I’ve only trained with them twice, but they’ve all been good to me, helped me out loads and made it easy for me.
“It helped that I played under Ian Millward at Leigh. I knew a few of the calls from last year.
“I thought me and Danny worked quite well and all the boys played well to be honest, we played well as a team. I thought I played all right, but the lads helped me out.
“I enjoyed my first experience of playing in front of the Castleford fans. The crowd was good, as you’re playing you can hear them singing and they really got behind the team, which helped us.”
Head coach Millward had words of praise for his new half-back.
He said: “Castleford fans should be excited at the debut of Jamie Ellis. I thought it was a very good performance.
“I’ve coached Jamie before and he’s got an outstanding kicking game. He’s a very good young English half-back and given time he can make his mark in Super League.”
