Castleford Tigers pulled off one of the surprise results of the Super League season when they produced a superb defensive display to beat leaders Wigan Warriors 18-4 on their own patch.
The Tigers had not won an away game since Easter, 2012, but were 12-0 up at half-time at the DW Stadium and held on against an attempted Wigan comeback to earn a fantastic two points.
The Warriors were without several first teamers, including star man Sam Tomkins, but still put out a strong side while Castleford named the same starting line-up from their win over Hull with just one change on the bench as Keith Mason came back in for the injured Ben Davies.
Cas opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Lewis Tierney collected Rangi Chase’s high kick only to drop the ball under a great tackle. Kirk Dixon, again playing at centre, followed up and crossed the line for a try he converted.
Wigan looked set to reply only for winger Pat Richards to drop the ball with the line at his mercy.
Another score went begging when Josh Charnley was judged to have knocked on before Darrell Goulding touched down.
The action switched to the other end and it was the Tigers’ turn to be unlucky as Chase was inches short of a try when tackled.
The visitors did stretch their lead when Dixon kicked a penalty and they made it 12-0 at half-time after Richard Owen burst clear and Jordan Tansey sent Grant Millington over.
Cas made a good start to the second half when Chase and Dixon combined to put winger James Clare over for a try to celebrate his signing of a new two-year contract.
Wigan finally got on the scoresheet on 58 minutes when winger Charnley crossed the line. But they were unable to reduce the deficit further against strong Tigers defence.
Castleford had the final word in the last minute after receiving another penalty which Dixon kicked to complete a memorable win.
