Club captain Michael Shenton is backing Castleford Tigers to have an improved season in 2014 on the back of a strong finish to the last campaign and the recruiting they have since done.
Shenton believes the increased strength in depth that the new signings have brought will stand the Tigers in good stead with competition for places in the starting line-up now in just about every position.
He told the Express: “I don’t like to get carried away, but if we work hard and get our combinations at halves right then we can do well in the season ahead.
“Our pack’s looking strong and the outside backs are good as well. Hopefully we’ll get everyone fit and we can make a big start to the season.
“The competition for places is going to be really good for us. We haven’t had that in a long time.
“With a bit of luck and if we keep the tough mentality going we should be pretty solid next year.
“We are aiming to be a lot more consistent and that’s a big thing for us.”
Shenton was pleased with the way the Tigers side he skippered last season finished their campaign off with some good wins and performances.
He said: “The goal last season was to finish strongly and finish on a high and I think definitely we did that.
“The last half of the season was pretty good for us really as we turned it round after a difficult start.
“We’re riding on the back of that and hopefully we can take that positivity and that form into the new year.”
