Wins in their next two games could be enough to clinch a top eight place for Castleford Tigers, but head coach Daryl Powell is refusing to look too far ahead in a Super League season full of unpredictability.

Three victories in their last three games have lifted the Tigers five points clear of Widnes Vikings in ninth place with five games to go, but Powell will not let his players ease off thinking they have already achieved anything.

He said: “We’re on a week to basis, I don’t want to look too far because it’s still tough and difficult to call.

“There’s a lot of different things that could change. We’ve got some real tough games.

“It’s important we stay focused on our performance levels and just improving on a week to week basis.

“I still think there’s so much improvement in us.”

The focus this week is on tomorrow night’s game against St Helens and Powell is expecting a cracking game for the fans to see as well as hoping for a change of luck for his side against opponents they are long overdue a win against.

He added: “We had a tough start and I thought we were pretty unlucky to lose the game at St Helens.

“But we’ve stabilised a fair bit since and look a good side at the moment.

“Obviously this is a significant challenge, as last week was. Both teams are on the back of big wins so it should be a great game.

“We’re in a different place, but I still don’t think we’re at our best. I think there’s lots to come from us and hopefully it will show on Thursday night.

“Hopefully it will be an outstanding atmosphere as it usually is here and the game should justify the support and the atmosphere.”
