New signing Garreth Carvell is in contention to make his debut for Castleford Tigers against Salford Red Devils on Saturday.
The vastly experienced England and Great Britain international prop signed on loan until the end of the season from Hull last week and will add to the Tigers’ pack strength
Carvell has shaped up well in training with his new team-mates and Cas head coach Daryl Powell is considering whether to draft him into his squad with changes likely following the defeat to St Helens.
Powell explained: “We’re okay injury-wise from last week. Justin Carney missed the game, but he was ill. He was throwing up and couldn’t keep any water down so would have been dehydrated.
“But potentially I’m looking at making some changes after it wasn’t a good performance.
“Hopefully Justin’s back and Garreth Carvell has come into the squad and will be there or thereabouts.
“Scott Wheeldon and Adam Milner didn’t play last week so there’s some potential to make changes there.”
Powell is looking forward to seeing what Carvell can add to his squad and is delighted to have the former Hull, Warrington and Leeds player’s services for the rest of the year.
As an added bonus for Cas he is not cup tied so can play in the Tetley’s Challenge Cup semi-final against Widnes.
“He is a big player. He’s explosive, gets into people’s chests and is difficult to handle,” said Powell.
“If he can get on the front foot he’s a player that can punch big holes up the middle of the field.
“He’s highly motivated and hasn’t got a contract for next year so he’ll be looking to play well.
“From a budget point of view it might be difficult to sign him for next year, but we’ve got an open mind on it and I’ve spoken to Gaz about it. We’ll just see how it goes.
“It’s a great opportunity for him to play and play for a contract, whether it’s with us or somewhere else. He’s certainly fitted in really, really well.”
