A newly-formed cycling club is flourishing thanks to the buzz of Britain’s cycling success on the world stage over the last 12 months.
Upton Cycling Club was formed this year and has already attracted a membership of 40 cyclists of all abilities.
The club has been created to cater for the local communities of South Elmsall, South Kirkby and Upton and the success of Team GB at last year’s Olympics, coupled with victories for Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome at the Tour de France, have helped boost interest in the sport, and the club.
Budding cyclists from all backgrounds and of all abilities are welcome to join, with members as young as nine years of age and as old as almost 69 signed up.
And the wide variety of pedal pushers have signed up not only to compete in competitions on the road and track but also to have a go at their own personal challenges and start a healthier lifestyle through taking up the sport.
The club holds road cycling rides on Saturday and Sunday mornings, meeting at the Upton Arms car park from 9am and midweek road cycling group training takes place every Tuesday and Thursday night from 6.30pm.
Road racing throughout the club’s first year has consisted of the local Hemsworth and Pollington Time Trial routes, covering 10 and 8.3 miles respectively.
The club has also started to develop mountain bike challenges for the local community, with rides starting every Saturday from 9am locally, while there have also been trips to the Sherwood Pines venue and Dalby Forest.
A local mountain bike challenge, called UCC - SESKU MTB Challenge, has been set-up over 14 miles for all to have a go at.
The route can be found on the MapMyRide website at www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/253139861 and more routes will be developed.
Upton Cycling Club formed with the help of several local businesses that have enabled a successful start to supporting cyclists in the local communities.
The club would like to thank YESSS electrical, Superflex Gym, Informate UK Ltd, MK Sports Therapy, Next, who have all supported the set-up of the club and its members.
