FRICKLEY Athletic remain in Evo-Stik Premier Division relegation trouble after Mickleover Sports grabbed three crucial points at the Tech5 Stadium on Saturday.
It could have been very different for the Blues, the form side going into the game, but James Ashmore missed a penalty with eight minutes to go and Sports went down the other end to grab what turned out to be the winner.
Defeat leaves Peter Rinkcavage’s men three points above the relegation zone but victory for Mickleover, who occupy the final relegation place, closed the gap to leave Frickley looking over their shoulder as the season enters its business end.
The visitors were the better team in the first half and Alex Steadman’s 30th-minute goal gave them a deserved half-time lead.
The Blues upped their gear at the start of the second half and were unlucky not to grab their equaliser before they did. It came in the 72nd minute when South headed home an Ollie Ryan cross.
Frickley sensed victory and they got the chance to take the lead with 18 minutes to go when South was fouled inside the box by Damian Clarke. The Mickleover goalkeeper only received a yellow card for the foul and to make matters worse, Ashmore saw his spot-kick saved.
It changed the flow of the second half and just two minutes later the visitors grabbed the winner. Karl Ashton was the scorer, heading home from close range to give Sports a big win.
