FRICKLEY Athletic battled hard against higher division opponents but fell to a 2-1 defeat in their latest pre-season friendly against Gainsborough Trinity at the weekend.
Blues boss Peter Rinkcavage experimented with his starting line-up and formation but the visitors started well and could have taken an early lead as Alex Callery and Bradley Grayson both came close.
Reward came for the South Elmsall side in the 36th minute when Lee Bennett broke through the Trinity defence and played a neat one-two with James Ashmore before drilling the ball into the back of the net.
Gainsborough managed to snatch an equaliser two minutes before the break and the hosts introduced a strong team for the second half.
The hosts upped the pressure on the restart and Blues stopper Lawrence Matthewson was forced into making some top-drawer saves.
Frickley looked to be heading for a draw before Gainsborough’s pressure paid off in the close stages when they found the winner.
The Blues continue their preparations for the forthcoming Evo-Stik Premier League campaign with a trip to AFC Emley on Tuesday night (kick-off 7.45pm).
Frickley: Matthewson (Bradshaw 84), Smith (Fisher 65), Kay, Bennett (Leonard 60), Adams, Simpkins, Callery, Ashmore (Walsh 70), Grayson (Ringrose 60), Ryan (Longstaff 60), Watts.
