HISTORY was made by Hemsworth squash supremo Katie Smith as she became the youngest ever player to take the Women's Senior Pontefract Squash Club Championships, writes Nick Rigg.

The 14-year-old has enjoyed a superb year on the court so far this term and peaked to become top female at the prestigious club after beating Julie Nevins 3-1 in the final.
Smith lost her second close-fought game 10-8, but didn't let that get to her, as she comfortably bagged victories in her other three matches to take the crown for the first time in her blossoming career.
The victory has seen Smith ranked number four in the country in the U15 rankings after the victory on home soil followed hot-on-the-heels of further impressive performances with the racquet recently.
The Hemsworth Arts and Community Coll-ege pupil took top honours in the Halifax Pro Shop U17s tournament before going on to put in a top-drawer performance to reach the semi-finals of the British Closed Championships in Nottingham, losing to the eventual winner Sophie Lemon.
She enjoyed further success by helping Yorkshire U15s Girls' to win the Inter-County Championships and was also part of the U17s County team.
And she went a step
further by representing the Northeast team, who defeated the South East in the national finals, with Smith taking the deciding match with a comfortable 3-0 victory.
