Hemsworth RUFC 8
Leeds Medics 5
HEMSWORTH RUFC opened 2010 with a close-fought victory over Leeds Medics and Dentists on Saturday.
The match was scheduled to be played at Leeds but the state of the pitch forced the game to be moved to Hemsworth's Moxon Fields pitch.
And the Yorkshire Division 4 clash provided plenty of entertainment, with the hosts just edging their opponents in their first game since the Christmas break.
Simon Frow's penalty kick gave the hosts an early lead before the Medics collected a loose ball from a Hemsworth error to dive over for the first try of the match.
But the conversion was missed, something that was to prove crucial in the match.
Both sides competed well but it was left to Guy Picketts to cross the line for Hemsworth for the winning points.
Before the game, a minutes silence was held for Upton soldier Luke Farmer, who lost his life in Afghanistan last week.
Hemsworth are on home soil again on Saturday when they welcome Adwick-le-Street, kick-off 2.15pm.
