A NEW dance craze is helping women in Upton keep fit, have fun and make new friends.
Zumba is a Latin-inspired fitness class that uses a variety of dance styles, including salsa, mambo, merengue and flamenco in its routines.

It is a cardio workout that can help dancers tone up, lose weight and improve their co-ordination.

Sarah Hellawell, of Daisy Fold, Upton, said: "It was my first time at the class today and I have really enjoyed it. I will be coming back."

Diane West, 46, of Quarry Lane, Upton, said: "I have been coming to Zumba from the beginning and I love it. It is very enjoyable. It is about time Upton had something like this – I think it is probably the best class in the village."

Rita Hepton, 56, of Minsthorpe Lane, South Elmsall, said: "I really like the music. I cannot always keep up but it is still fun."

The classes run between 8.15pm to 9pm on Mondays – with the exception of the second in every month – at Upton Village Hall on Harewood Lane. Sessions cost £4.

It sounds a lot better than the pole dancing classes which have been mentioned in the past anyway. Very downmarket I thought.
