Letter - Town End: progress on all fronts

Have your say

In response to the letter from Coun Walsh last week I would like to reassure people that progress is being made on all the projects we, and the private sector, are investing in for Pontefract.

The Northern Relief Road is currently out to tender with a start on site envisaged for late spring and due to completed by December 2014. This summer will also see work start on Monkhill station. Work has already began at the Prince of Wales Colliery site in December – something Coun Walsh should remember as he joined Coun Box, leader of the council, at the launch event last year.

After the completion of phase one, work is continuing in the town centre as part of the Pontefract Townscape Initiative, which is seeing £1.5m being invested in Pontefract. The improvements to Town End Junction are on track and are expected to be built this year. The finance is in place and the land negotiations which are with the solicitors are expected to conclude soon.

We will also be carrying out other schemes to relieve traffic congestion in and around Pontefract which will take account of existing issues and the impact of future development.

I acknowledge there is still work to be done but we are most definitely moving forward.

Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Growth
