Letter - ‘I’ve got some sympathy’

Have your say

I know it is not fashionable to say it, but I do have a certain amount of sympathy for the council.

Faced with the subsidy from the government being reduced over the last few years the council have to make huge cuts to local services.

Now don’t get me wrong I am no admirer of politicians, local or national, I know they waste a lot of money on vanity products but it still does not detract from the fact that the Tory government continues to despise funding all forms of public services.

I do think it is a bit rich for certain Labour representatives to bemoan the actions of the Tories, when they were the architects of our present circumstances, they allowed them to get into power in the first place.

There is no doubt if this government continues in power there will be very little left of public services. I accept that the finances need to be controlled, but why go from one extreme to the other, why can it not be done in a more softer way.

Sacking 1,400 workers is without doubt a very severe measure which will lead to real damage to areas of the local community.

I also understand why people are upset about the increase in the Community Charge by 2%, nobody wants to pay more, but at least it is being spent locally.

Unlike energy bills, which rise by 10% every year, and that goes in the pockets of greedy bosses who usually work for a foreign company.

We need show our disapproval through the ballot box, what we desperately need is someone who truly represents the much maligned British electorate.
