Young newshounds create their own version of the Express

Budding writers helped to create their own version of the Express front page as part of a literacy lesson.

The children from Upton Primary School were asked to come up with headlines, eyewitness accounts and pictures for the article.

Their stories were based on an alternative version of Little Red Riding Hood that involved the wolf eating grandma before being persuaded to drink a gallon of ginger beer then burping grandma to freedom.

The children’s brief included sticking to a tight deadline and checking the spelling and grammar of their stories.

Craig Thorpe, year five class teacher, said: “The children really enjoyed the lesson.

“It was part of our literacy work - our current topic question is ‘how different will you be when you are as old as your grandparents?’ The children really enjoyed the frenetic newsroom atmosphere we tried to create.”
