A firefighter has warned his crew’s lives are being put at risk after a series of allotment fires.

Al Senior, Watch Commander at South Kirkby fire station said they had been called out to four blazes at plots in Upton during the past five days.

The most recent call outs to the Bell Street allotments were at 12.25pm and 4.25pm yesterday.

Watch Commander Senior said: “Police are aware and investigations are ongoing but it looks like these have been deliberate fires.

“In some cases LPG cylinders have been present, which is highly dangerous.

“It is putting firefighters in harm’s way unnecessarily.

“We take certain precautions but it is still very dangerous and it is taking resources away from where else they are needed.”
