A car passenger was seriously injured and two others taken to hospital when their vehicle hit a tree on Friday evening.

Fire fighters were called to the crash on Wakefield Road, Hemsworth, just after 10pm and had to take the roof of the car to rescue the injured man, who was trapped inside.

The Suzuki Sift careered off the road at a right hand bend near Hemsworth Water Park and hit the tree around nine feet up after rolling several times.

Police and paramedics were also at the scene, and the injured passenger was taken to Leeds General Infirmary for treatment on suspected spinal injuries.
