A COUPLE have become the latest market stall holders to expand thanks to a scheme to boost the district’s economy.

Craig and Gaynor Thorpe, who run Watch Wise, have traded on Wakefield market for six years and Castleford market for four years.

And Mr and Mrs Thorpe are now also trading in South Elmsall thanks to the Wakefield Council scheme which offers discounted trading for stallholders.

Mrs Thorpe said: “We had been looking for a new market and a trader we know at South Elmsall said this shop unit would be ideal for us.

“You don’t expect great takings in the first few months so thanks to the scheme you can get started without worrying about the rent straight away. It’s a really good incentive.”

The couple, from North Humberside, opened the stall on Saturday, October 20 and are currently enjoying four weeks free trading, which will be followed by four weeks half-price, and then four weeks with a 25 per cent discount.

They now employ eight members of staff and the new stall will create another part-time vacancy after setting up in business in Keighley in 1996.

The scheme is open to new and existing stallholders, aged 16 or over, that would like help setting up their business.
