Three crews tackled a 130-tonne rubbish fire at a quarry this morning (Monday).

Staff from Pontefract, Castleford and Normanton rushed to the blaze at the Park Balk Quarry in Wormersley Road, Knottingley, at around 9.23am.

Pontefract’s watch commander Maurice Blezzard said it took the teams around three hours to extinguish the fire.

An extra vehicle had to be called out to move large rocks to gain entry to the scene and water had to be shipped in from elsewhere because there was no nearby supply.

It is not known how the fire was started.
