THREE people have been charged with the attempted murder of a former Wakefield school pupil from Barnsley.

Daniel Whiteley, 19, was found seriously injured in a water-filled ditch at the bottom of an embankment in Platt Fields park, Fallowfield, Greater Manchester, last Tuesday.

The first-year Manchester University student from Darton received multiple injuries to his head and body, and is in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

Michael Brownlie, 26, Nicholas Lindsay, 21, and Katie Mongan, 18, all of Longsight in Manchester, have been charged with attempted murder.

They appeared at Manchester City Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Police had struggled to identify Mr Whiteley, who studied for his A Levels at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in Wakefield, for 36 hours until officers found a set of keys in the ditch.

His parents have been staying in Manchester while he remains at Salford Royal Hospital.
