Thieves ransacked a carpet shop causing thousands of pound worth of damage.

They broke into Carpets Direct on Bridge Road, Horbury, through the roof sometime between 5pm on Saturday and 10.30am on Sunday.

The vandals stole several rolls of underlay and carpeting, as well as security cameras and monitors.

A charity box for Great Ormond Street Hospital, a signed Wakefield Trinity Wildcats shirt and fishing equipment was also taken.

The thieves smashed down the fire exit door at the side of the building and put the stolen goods in a vehicle. They then left the scene.

Carpets Direct owner Daniel Davidson said: “They ransacked the place and tried to take as much as they could.

“The draws were all open so they must have been looking for cash. The damage and cost of what was taken is in the thousands.”

The store, which is open seven days a week, stayed open for business on Sunday despite the break-in.

Mr Davidson said the company has now upgraded its security system and fitted new alarms.

Any witnesses should call police on 101 and quote the crime reference number 13160033757.
