Final tests on the new managed motorway section of the M62 are taking place this week.

Overhead electronic signs are being tested on the eastbound carriageway of the M62 between junctions 29 at Lofthouse and 30 at Rothwell.

During the tests, traffic officers in the regional control centre at Wakefield will open up the eastbound hard shoulder to traffic by setting the overhead signs to tell drivers they can use it as an extra lane.

Variable mandatory speed limits, indicated by a red ring, will also be displayed to help improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.

If next week’s testing is successful, the Highways Agency hopes to make the two remaining sections, between junctions 28 and 30 will become fully operational later this month.
