SCHOOLS in the Express area have been singing to the sound of success after being awarded a top arts award.

Pupils at Upton Primary School and Hemsworth Arts and Community College were given the Artsmark Gold Award.

The accreditation - awarded by Arts Council England - acknowledges school which give pupils the chance to take part in drama, arts and music.

Barbara Igoe, Upton’s arts teacher and co-ordinator of the programme, said: “I have taught in the area for 38 years and there has always had a tradition of music in schools. This just proves that we are carrying that tradition on, which is fantastic.”

This is the fourth time Hemsworth Arts and Community College have been given the award.

Stephen Foster, assistant principal, said: “Less than five per cent of all schools in West Yorkshire have held the award at this level for as long.
