Restaurants serve Christmas dinners to the homeless

While a Mexican or a chippy tea might not be your average Christmas lunch, three Wakefield restaurants are opening their doors today to serve the dishes to the homeless.

Mex Cantina in the city centre, Avondale Fisheries in Thornes and Casey’s Fish and Chip Shop in Ossett are giving out a free festive meal to vulnerable people in need.

Avondale owners Angela and James Blair will distribute meals via a voucher system run with Wakefield Council. They will also deliver meals to homeless people in Castleford.

Casey’s chip shop will spread extra Christmas cheer by raising money for homeless organisation the Community Awareness Programme.

Owner John Haggerston said: “We don’t want anyone to feel alone at this time of year so just call in for a bite to eat and some mulled wine.”

And Mex is taking part in Streetsmart, a scheme backed by the Express which invites customers to add £1 to their bills to help the homeless.

To pre-order at Casey’s, call 01924 274851. To contact Mex dial 01924 363666 and for Avondale Fisheries, call 01924 371404.
