HELP re-write history and give old photographs a new past.
Hemsworth Arts and Community College is asking people to use their imaginations to write their own versions of history relating to eight unidentified photographs from the area.
The lost photographs, from as far back as the Victorian period up until the 1960s, are being displayed at South Elmsall Library, Hemsworth Library, St Helen’s Church in Hemsworth and the Church of the Resurrection in Fitzwilliam, until February 28.
Kerry Cockerham, assistant creative project organiser at the college, said: “It is a great way of encouraging people to improve their literacy while being involved with the area’s history at the same time.”
The idea came about when the mother of assistant principle at the college, Stephen Foster, came across two photographs that she could not identify after she suffered a stroke. So he decided to ask other people for old photographs so their stories could be re-written.
The best suggestions will be expanded on by professional writers in a workshop and the final piece will be displayed in the cafe at Theatre Royal Wakefield in September.
