MINSTHORPE swimming pool will reduce its opening hours on a Sunday and the learner pool will close three days a week after Wakefield Council decided to cut hours to save cash.

From Monday, April 2, the pool, on Ash Grove, South Elmsall, will open at 9am but close at 1pm on Sundays and the learner pool will close on Tuesdays, Thursday and Fridays.

The council saving scheme has also affected Castleford, Featherstone, Normanton and Pontefract swimming pools, and will save the council £100,000. A public consultation took place before the decision was made.

Castleford, Featherstone, Normanton and Pontefract swimming pools will open one hour earlier and close at 9.30pm on weekdays.

On Sundays Castleford, Normanton and Pontefract swimming pools will close at 2.30pm and Featherstone swimming pool will close at 1pm.

More than 1,600 residents cast their votes specifying the changes they wanted to see.

Coun David Dagger, cabinet member for culture, sport and libraries, said: “I am pleased with the amount of responses we received to ensure that the option chosen would have the minimum disruption to the majority of people who use the pools.

“We need to make considerable savings for the year ahead and this means making some difficult decisions.

“Making these changes to the opening times of our swimming pools will ensure that we can keep all our leisure facilities open, and continue to offer a great service to people across the district.”
