A club run by and for old people for more than 60 years is the latest group to be awarded the Express 100 Community Grant.

The new Fitzwilliam and Kinsley ‘old folks’ treat fund’ is run by a committee which organises a special meal for around 250 elderly residents.

They also have music, bingo and raffles to entertain the group. Each person that comes along to the meal also gets chocolates and a small bottle of whisky.

The meal takes place around Christmas time.

Alison Sills, 59, honorary secretary of the group, applied for the grant earlier this year and was thrilled to find out the group had been successful. She said: “It’s fantastic, and means so much to us all.”

The cash was handed over to the group on Tuesday by community life champion Angela Spencer from Asda Distribution Centre - which is teaming up with the Express for the year-long campaign.

The special lunch takes place on May 15 and costs around £3,000 so the committee raises cash through weekly bingo sessions.

Mrs Sills added: “It’s such a wonderful day for everyone and for a lot of the elderly people it’s something they really look forward to as they live alone.”
