New kitchen for community

OLD and young alike will benefit from a newly installed kitchen in Fitzwilliam Community Centre.

Contractor Kier was appointed to renovate Wakefield and District Housing properties on Newstead Crescent and decided to install the kitchen so residents would have a place to use while their homes were upgraded.

But the new facility will also benefit members of the Fitzwilliam Youth Club and the Darby and Joan club as well as a luncheon club and old folk’s treat club, for years to come.

The Wakefield Road facility, which is known locally as the Old Folk’s Centre, has benefited from a number of renovations, including new central heating, over the last three years. The work was carried out by Wakefield Council, which runs the centre.

Coun Ann Westmorland said: “The kitchen is almost complete now and it looks much better. The people who use the centre will definitely benefit from the upgrade. Having the heating in has also made a big difference and it is a much nicer facility for the community now.”

Kier is currently refurbishing more than 600 WDH properties across the district in a £7m programme.
