Work to upgrade the M62 to a managed motorway has moved a step nearer completion.
The second section of the motorway, between junction 26 at Chain Bar and junction 27 at Gildersome, went fully operational on Monday.
During busy periods, overhead signs will tell motorists when they can use the hard shoulder as an extra lane and a variable speed limit will be in place.
If signs are not illuminated on the stretch between junction 26 and 28, then normal motorway regulations apply.
David Pilsworth, Highways Agency project manager, said: “This is the busiest section of motorway in the scheme and we are delighted that drivers will soon feel the benefits of less congestion at peak times.”
The whole project is due to be completed in the autumn.
