LONG term youth unemployment in the area has rocketed by more than 480 per cent in the last year.

The number of people aged 16 to 24 claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) for a year or more in Hemsworth has gone up from 25 last August to a staggering 145 this year, statistics from the Office for National Statistics show.

The increase is almost double the national average which has risen by almost 250 per cent to 52,600.

Jon Trickett, MP for Hemsworth, said: “This weeks unemployment figures offer no let up for young people in our towns and villages who are still paying the price for this Government’s economic failure.”

“Long term youth unemployment here in the Hemsworth constituency is up a massive 480 per cent in the last year, but ministers still refuse to take decisive action.”

The Express reported back in April how youth unemployment in the area – determined by parliamentary boundaries - was the highest in the Wakefield district.

It is not just Hemsworth that has seen such a dramatic rise though.

Figures in the Wakefield constituency have also rocketed by more than 600 per cent to 185.

But unemployment in the area as a whole fell 3.3 per cent in the year to March 2012 to 6.9 per cent – lower than the national average of 8.1 per cent.

With Britain stuck in a double-dip recession, and university tuition fees rising from this month, Mr Trickett said swift action is needed to prevent the figures from rising even further.

He said: “Britain needs a change of course fast. No-one can deny that we are now in the longest double-dip recession since the Second World War.”
