Youth centre launch event is right on cue

THE mayor sank the red into the corner pocket as she took on a teen at the opening of a £250k Havercroft youth facility.

Havercroft and Ryhill Youth Centre, off Mulberry Avenue, offers youngsters a wide variety of activities, including football, basketball and indoor sports, such as pool.

Coun Albert Manifield, vice-chairman of Havercroft with Cold Hiendley Parish Council, unveiled a plaque to formally open the centre last Friday.

And Mayor of Wakefield Coun Heather Hudson got involved with some of the things on offer along with Coun Part Garbutt, Wakefield Council's cabinet member for children and young people, and Elaine McHale, corporate director of family services.

The centre, a single storey extension on Havercroft and Ryhill Sports Centre, was built using a 246,000 grant from Wakefield Council, in a joint venture between Ryhill Parish Council and Havercroft with Cold Hiendley Parish Council.

It unofficially opened in April 2009, replacing the former Ryhill Youth Centre on Cemetery Road, and is used by around 30 youngsters after school each day.

It also has a kitchen area, a games zone, a quiet room and an IT suite.

Ward Richards, chairman of the management committee, which runs both the sports and youth centre, said: "Coun Manifield performed the official opening and we had local parish councillors and people involved in getting the centre built there too. The mayor of Wakefield had a look around the centre and talked to the kids who were using it at the time.

"We like to think the centre has been a success since it opened – we have between 25 and 35 young people using it every night after school. It is open every day for them."

Coun Garbutt said: "Providing top quality resources and support for our young people is a key priority for the council. We've also worked closely and successfully with our colleagues in local parish councils to bring this project to fruition."
