Youngsters get involved in building project

Youngsters from Ryhill Junior and Infant School got a taste of construction work when they were involved in a building project in the village.

Ten members of the school’s student council worked with Wakefield and District Housing (WDH) to come up with a new name for a street on the organisation’s new property development and also designed posters promoting safety on building sites.

More than 60 names for the street were put forward by pupils at the school and 11-year-old Liam Lafferty’s suggestion of Westfield Mews was chosen as the winner.

Alison Edwards, school council co-ordinator, said: “The children have really enjoyed seeing the development from start to finish.

“They came here when there was nothing built and saw all the plans, and now they get to see the completed homes.”

The children were treated to guided tour of the five
new three-bedroom properties.

Jane Gwilliam, WDH tenant involvement officer, said: “It’s great to get local children involved as they’ll grow up and know they’ve been part
of something that makes a positive difference to the
community.”
