Work starts on new £6.5m super surgery
WORK has started on the £6.5m super surgery that is set to improve services for residents in the Express area.
The ceremonial turf cutting took place on Friday with work starting on the two-storey centre afterwards at Langthwaite Industrial Estate, South Kirkby.
The new centre will provide health services for 12,000 people and will combine Little Lane and Stockingate surgeries. It is estimated to take 52 weeks to build the centre.
A pharmacy, NHS dentist, and shop will also be in the same building.
Community services currently provided at South Elmsall Health Centre, such as podiatry, community dentist, sexual health, speech therapy, health visitor and district nursing will also move into this new facility.
Leader of South Kirkby and Moorthorpe Town Council, Coun Laurie Harrison, said at the opening: “It is a very important day for local communities.
“The life expectancy of people in our area is lower than neighbouring towns and that needs addressing, and this new health centre is the start of that change. It is a necessary investment for the health of the community and I am proud to be part of it.”
Dr Bidisha Buckham, of Stockingate surgery, said she was excited about the centre.
She said: “It’s been a dream come true and it is fantastic it has finally come together. I hope it meets the challenges of the new NHS.”
David Curtis, clinical chair for community services at The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “This is an exciting new development and our healthcare professionals are looking forward to providing the same high quality care for people in a brand new modern environment.”
Hemsworth MP Jon Trickett also attended the opening and said: “I am really pleased that the communities of South Elmsall, South Kirkby and Moorthorpe will have a fantastic new health facility.
“I was involved in the discussions in the early days and it is great to see it moving on.
“All credit is due to the Coun Laurie Harrison and the local doctors who have worked tirelessly to deliver this project.”
