Work begins on new headquarters for Wakefield police

WORK has begun to build the new divisional headquarters for Wakefield police.

A ground breaking ceremony was carried out at Havertop Lane, Normanton by the Chief Constable of West Yorkshrie Sir Norman Bettison and The Chairman of West Yorkshire Police Authority, Councillor Mark Burns-Williamson this afternoon to mark the start of work on the new purpose built building.

And another ceremony was performed at the police’s Carr Gate base where the Operational Support Division is based which is also being extended.

The new buildings will provide a modernworking environment for officers and will include a community facility.

Sir Norman said: “This is the moment when Wakefield district moves from having the oldest police station in the country – in Castleford – to the newest and that gives me a great deal of excitement.

“We are pleased that work has officially begun on these new facilities. It will put West Yorkshire Police at the forefront of modern policing and enable the force to provide the best possible service to communities of West Yorkshire.”

Councillor Mark Burns-Williamson, said: “We are today embracing of putting in good hands the future of West Yorkshire Police.

“I hope the new building will have a positive impact on the local economy with jobs being made available to local people.”

The Normanton headquarters is expected to be completed by December 2013.
