Woman heads a new cancer charity group

Dedicated Hannah Jackson Duke is hoping to raise lots of money for a charity close to her heart by starting up a fundraising group.

Mrs Jackson Duke is heading the new Macmillan Cancer Support committee that will raise cash throughout the year by holding quiz nights and themed evenings for the charity.

Mrs Jackson Duke, 39, of Hebble Way, South Elmsall, decided to help the charity after her father died of cancer 17 years ago. Her sisiter also fought Hodkin’s Lymphoma and has been clear of the illness for ten years.

Mrs Jackson Duke was approached by a door-to-door Macmillan fundraiser who asked if she had thought about raising cash. She felt inspired by it and held a coffee morning.

After the success of the event, she decided she wanted to carry on helping the cancer charity.

She said: “I was amazed at how people with very busy lives were so generous of their time and money and really willing to do something to help others.

“It is so easy to become wrapped up in your own life and I saw how giving a small amount of my time, and getting other people to do the same could make such a difference.

“I remembered that many of the difficulties we faced whilst dealing with cancer were day to day things that we normally take for granted and Macmillan can make such a difference.

“I no longer wanted to bury my head in the sand and leave the fundraising to other people. It inspired me to do something more to help.”

The committee will cover the whole area and Mrs Jackson Duke hopes more people will come forward to help the charity.

If anyone would like to help, contact Macmillan’s fundraising manager Maria Amos on 07834 191243.
