The new community-run library in Upton is due to open its doors at Easter after four months of delays.

As part of budget cuts, Wakefield Council decided to pull funding from some libraries across the district and encouraged community groups to come forward to run them.

The library on Waggon Lane, closed on November 30 and community group Upton and North Elmsall Forum (UNEF) was due to get the keys from the council that day.

However, the handover was delayed until February 5 because of legal issues between both sides’ solicitors.

Lee Pickin, one of the directors of UNEF, said: “It was fantastic to get the keys. It’s been a delayed process.

“We are elated that we can start to bring library services back into the community.”

“We are hoping to move services forward with ebooks being available. We will have 10 computers for public use, as well as a wifi system for people to bring their laptops and tablets.”

“The more people that embrace the library, the more diverse the services will be.”
