Tributes to popular teacher

MINSTHORPE Community College has paid tribute to an “outstanding” teacher who began his career at the South Elmsall school.

Glyn Griffiths, 58, lost his battle with a brain tumour two weeks ago.

He joined Minsthorpe in 1977 and spent 14 years at the college, with half the time spent as head of biology.

He then took a break from teaching and worked as a training consultant for Admiral Training before spells at various schools, including Horbury High School and Cathedral Academy, where he was teaching when he became ill.

He leaves behind his wife of 17 years Gill, who also taught at Minsthorpe, and two younger brothers.

Chrissie Yates, assistant principal at the college, said: “Glyn began his teaching career at Minsthorpe High School and Community College in the September of 1977- 35 years ago where he joined the science department.

“Two years later he was to meet the love of his life Gill who became his wife when she in her turn came to work as a history teacher at Minsthorpe.

“He is still remembered as an outstanding teacher who possessed a wicked sense of humour. It is a cruel tragic fact that they were both poised to enjoy a long and well deserved happy retirement together before this tragic event.

“All at Minsthorpe send their deepest sympathies and support to Gill at this most tragic of times.”

Mr Griffiths was born in Castleford and lived in Ackworth. His hobbies included films, reading, history, cooking and rugby union.

During his ten years at Cathedral Academy, he became well known for his experiments during science lessons and even stepped into the shoes of Santa during a Christmas Craft Fair.

Blue Smith, head of science at Cathedral Academy, said: “If something went bang in science it was usually Glyn with 30 excited children.

“He will definitely be missed at Cathedral.”

His funeral will take place at Pontefract Crematorium on Wednesday, May 16, at 10.40am, followed by a celebration of his life.
