Town sparkles as lights are switched on
Hewsworth Christmas lights switch on Jolly tots switch the lights on
THE Hemsworth community braved the cold to watch the town’s annual Christmas lights switch on.
Hundreds of people enjoyed a full day of festive activities in the town last Thursday.
School children sang Christmas carols from 10am and there was an all- day festive market on Cross Hills precinct.
There was also a craft fair and a performance from South Kirkby Singers in the Community Centre to round off the festivities.
Those charged with the all-important job of pushing the plunger were toddlers from the Jolly Tots play group.
Harry Barber, two, Luke Barber, five, Ella Jeffries, four, Ben Jeffries, two, Molly Jeffries, one, Aidan Evans, five, Regan Evans, two, Sam Fletcher, five and Charlie Fletcher, two, illuminated the town when they turned the lights on.
Hemsworth Town Council leader Tony Upson said: “It was excellent. It was very well attended throughout the day and the crowds packed onto the precinct for the switch-on in the evening.
“It’s very important to have events like this because it brings everybody together. There was something for every age group, which is a hard thing to do, so it’s nice to bridge that age gap.
“I can’t put a head count on the number of people there but all the market traders said they had a good day and if they were happy then it must have been well attended.”
