Top award for amateur artist

BUDDING mosaic maker Diane Rawson has been chosen as a finalist in a national arts competition.

Ms Rawson, 48, of Quarry Lane, Upton, was chosen as the regional winner of the Topps Tiles competition for her piece of art entitled Waterfall.

She said: "I was astounded to actually win, I couldn't believe it. It was such a huge surprise because I had seen previous winners and they were brilliant and never thought my piece could win. I'm just so happy."

Ms Rawson completed a beginner's course in the artform taught by Jo Hepworth at Westfield Lane Social Centre, South Elmsall, who said of her pupil's winning mosaic: "I thought it was a fantastic piece of artwork, she has been a star student."

Her mosaic masterpiece will go on to national judging later this month competing against 17 other regional finalists.

The competition, run by Topps Tiles, celebrates the work of beginners who are learning at adult education centres, community groups and workshops.

If Ms Rawson is crowned winner, she will receive 500 commission from Topps Tiles to create a mosaic.

Prizes were presented by Paul Cull, store manager of Topps Tiles on Ings Road, Wakefield.

Diane received a certificate and a cheque for 100 and Jo Hepworth was awarded store vouchers worth 300 to purchase coursework materials.
