Tax hike for Hemsworth?

HEMSWORTH taxpayers could be paying out more this year if a town council budget is approved on Tuesday.

Hemsworth Town Council is looking to increase its annual precept from 464,000 to 482,000, which is an increase of 3.9 per cent.

But taxpayers will only pay a rise of 2.9 per cent, as new properties in the area means there are more households to share the costs.

This means band A properties will increase to 81.96, band B properties to 95.64, band C properties to 109.30 and band D properties to 122.95.

The budget will be agreed at a special town council meeting at 7.30pm on Tuesday at the council's Bank Street offices.

The budget was frozen last year, which led to a slight decrease in what each household was paying due to the increase in properties.

But a number of projects by the council – including a new community hall and football facilities, improvements to the allotments, costs at Hemsworth Water Park, including alterations to the former Windsurfer pub and new equipment for Playworld – meant the precept had to increase this year.

Chairman of the council Graham West said: "I think it is an excellent report. It is well contained and is clear as to what we are looking to achieve.

"With the new facilities coming online and to say we have taken on other services which were previously funded by others I think it is a good budget."

See next week's Express for a full breakdown of the budget.
