Talks still ongoing on the future of library services in the area
WAKEFIELD Council is working with community groups to decide the future of libraries in the Express area.
The authority decided to cut funding to the service last year and carried out a consultation in September asking residents what they wanted to see change at their local branch.
Lisa Dodd, service director for culture, said: “We are currently working closely with community groups across the district, including Upton Parish Council, to help them develop viable proposals for community-led library provision in case their current service is found to be unsustainable.”
The council is still awaiting findings from the consultation and no decisions to the future of the libraries had been made.
Hemsworth Library on Market Street, and South Elmsall Library on Barnsley Road will continue to be run by the authority as ‘hub’ libraries. But Upton, Kinsley, South Kirkby and Havercroft libraries are at risk of closure if another organisation does not come forward to take them on.
Upton and North Elmsall Parish council are sending proposals to take over the site on Waggon Lane. The Kinsley and Fitzwilliam Community Resource Centre has made plans to take over Kinsley library, which is joined to its building on Wakefield Road.
